Books for a Baby Shower

You Will Make a Great Mom Mele

So the baby shower is coming up and I had to decide, read the online options from Target, Babies R Us and Amazon or ... go buy a favorite book.

Surprise, surprise, I bought a book. It was a toss up between Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things That Go.

GOODNIGHT MOON

When I was ready for my daughter to sleep through the night, I took this book into her room, sat down in the rocking chair and started reading. I lost track of the times I read that book through that night, it was either seventeen or twenty-seven. I thought I would never forget that but twenty years later, I have. Suffice it to say, I memorized the book. Luckily for me, it was lyrical. She fell asleep. I recommend it.

Being a parent is great; however, sometimes the play is a tinch repetitive. Kids love repetition, they crave repetition. If you tell kids to run around a baby pool or kick a ball at the garage door twenty-five times, they will, counting at the top of their lungs. It's why Duck, Duck, Goose is so popular. Later the same children will try to get twenty-five free throws in a row, or twenty-five tennis serves or twenty-five anythings. It's how they learn and become proficient. Reading a book is the same thing, twenty-five times!!! So choose books you, as the adult, can stand to read that many times in a row.

The Richard Scarry book manages to be repetitive and fresh at the same time and thus continues to delight parents as well as kids with its humor. After much deliberation, I purchased the Richard Scarry book and my daughter decided on Goodnight Moon. Both of them have great illustrations and the hidden goldbug and mouse are pure delights. One will work when he is one and the other will work when he is two and three.

Ida Sherwood Bettis is my paternal grand mother. Aunt Clara is my great aunt. I can remember every nooks and crany of that house and yard...
