Relatives from Out-of-Town go to Weddings “Back Home”
My great grandmother was a Fairchild from Hammondsport, Steuben Co., New York. When her sister got married, her husband, my great grandfather and their daughter attended the wedding. I knew from family stories and the 1900 census that Lucy S. Fairchild and Charles J. Clark were married in St. James Episcopal Church, Hammondsport, Steuben Co., New York in 1897. While checking out the search engines above I found a Henritze reference in the out-of-town wedding guests listed in a newspaper from Elmira, Chemung Co., New York.
Elmira Daily Gazette and Free Press, 21 Jan. 1897
The ink was light, the OCR may not have captured everyone, however I now know the specific wedding date without sending for the civil information from Steuben Co., New York. The price was right free vs. the copy fee and the time was right a minutes vs. some weeks. All this from a newspaper in a neighboring county published fifty miles away.
I will be investigating my great grandmother’s time line to see why her husband and daughter went from Welch to Hammondsport for the wedding of her sister and she did not.
